The idea of upcycling a flour sack is nothing new. It has long been used by our Lolas and Titas. Because women are very resourceful, they turn sacks into blankets, pillow cases, infant napkins, towels, and dresses. Not only in the Philippines, this is also a historical item in the United States... the time of the Great depression. Due to the lack of resources, women thought of ways how to reuse a flour sacks.
Flours sacks in the US was originally plain, there were no prints. And the time when the manufacturers of flour learned about women recycling the sacks and making dresses out of it, they started producing flour sacks with different prints that will serve as a design. There are already existing small businesses in the Philippines that sell Katsa products, but the use of Katsa for clothing is still not popular among Gen Z. And this is the purpose of our advocacy, to raise the awareness of upcycled flour sack-clothing by executing a sustainable fashion campaign.
